Floating shelves look like magic, but the trick is all in the bracket. We used steel rod supports drilled into the studs, then slid solid oak boards over them so no hardware shows. The result carries real weight — books, plants, a full row of cookbooks — without a single visible screw.
Start by finding your studs and marking a dead-level line; a laser level saves a lot of grief here. Drill the bracket holes slightly undersized so the rods bite hard, and test-fit the board before you commit to glue. Two coats of hardwax oil bring out the grain and shrug off fingerprints.
Budget about $60 in oak and $25 in brackets per shelf. The whole project is beginner-friendly as long as you own or can borrow a drill and a level — swap in your own wood species and finish to match the room.
